چکیده

The tropospheric biennial oscillation (TBO) is conventionally considered to involve transitions between the Indian and Australian summer monsoons and the interactions between these two monsoons and the underlying Indo-Pacific Oceans. Here it is shown that, since the early 1990s, the TBO has evolved to mainly involve the transitions between the western North Pacific (WNP) and Australian monsoons. In this framework, the WNP monsoon replaces the Indian monsoon as the active Northern Hemisphere TBO monsoon center during recent decades. This change is found to be caused by stronger Pacific–Atlantic coupling and an increased influence of the tropical Atlantic Ocean on the Indian andWNPmonsoons. The increased Atlantic Ocean influence damps the Pacific Ocean influence on the Indian summer monsoon (leading to a decrease in its variability) but amplifies the PacificOcean influence on theWNP summermonsoon (leading to an increase in its variability). These results suggest that the Pacific–Atlantic interactions have become more important to the TBO dynamics during recent decades.

The influence of tropospheric biennial oscillation on mid‐tropospheric CO2

[1] Mid‐tropospheric CO2 retrieved from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) was used to investigate CO2 interannual variability over the Indo‐Pacific region. A signal with periodicity around two years was found for the AIRS mid‐tropospheric CO2 for the first time, which is related to the Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation (TBO) associated with the strength of the monsoon. During a strong (we...

Monsoon Climate Variabilities

The Asian monsoon consists of three subcomponents, Indian monsoon (IM), East Asian monsoon (EAM), and western North Pacific monsoon (WNPM). All these submonsoon systems exhibit remarkable intraseasonal and interannual variabilities. In this chapter, we will review recent progress in understanding the monsoon annual cycle and some of major issues related to the monsoon intraseasonal and interann...

Spatiotemporal Structures and Mechanisms of the Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation in the Indo-Pacific Warm Ocean Regions*

The observed structure and seasonal evolution characteristics of the tropospheric biennial oscillation (TBO) in the warm ocean areas of the Indo-Pacific region are explored using a seasonal-sequence EOF analysis approach. The major convective activity centers associated with the TBO appear in the southeast Indian Ocean (SEIO) and western North Pacific (WNP), accompanied by anticyclonic (or cycl...

The effect of doubled CO2 and model basic state biases on the monsoon-ENSO system. II: Changing ENSO regimes

Integrations of a fully-coupled climate model with and without flux adjustments in the equatorial oceans are performed under 2 × CO2 conditions to explore in more detail the impact of increased greenhouse gas forcing on the monsoon-ENSO system. When flux adjustments are used to correct some systematic model biases, ENSO behaviour in the modelled future climate features distinct irregular and pe...
